Ballyfermot College of Further Education, Higher National Diploma in Traditional Music Performance:

Ceoltóir

 

Ceoltóir is the name given to Ballyfermot College of Further Education’s Higher National Diploma in Traditional Music Performance.  The course is of two years duration and is suitable for musicians and singers who wish to improve as performers with a view to pursuing a career in Irish traditional music.  The course is practical in nature with an emphasis on performance. Students perform on a regular basis in various venues throughout Dublin and beyond.  In 2nd year students are expected to record, engineer and produce their own CD, using College facilities. Another feature of the course is regular visits and guest lectures by leading figures in the world of traditional music.

 

Course Content:

 

Year 1-  Music Notation, Harmony and Arranging, Music Performance Studies, Music Performance Skills, Music Technology, Computer Music Composition and Production, Traditional Performing Arts, Regional Styles in Irish Traditional Music.

 

Year 2-  Traditional Music and Song from Scotland , Brittany and the North of England, Planning for Public Performance, Creative Arts Research Skills, Project design, Implementation and Evaluation, Music Studio Production, The Music Business in the 21st Century, World Music Studies, Harmony and Composition.

 

Progression:

 

Graduates may gain exemptions from one or two years of degree courses in the UK or may choose to continue performing on the traditional music circuit. Graduates who achieve a merit/distinction profile may also apply for entry to the BA (Hons) in Media Production Management programme in BCFE (accredited by Dublin City University). A number of our former students have completed Masters programmes or in some cases Doctorates in various Universities both in Ireland and abroad.Many of our former students have established themselves as respected performers in traditional music circles and continue to make a valuable contribution to the art form through their recordings, workshops and live performances. Some of our former students, after further study have chosen to enter the teaching profession at either Primary level, Second level and in some cases, Third level. Others have established their own private schools of music both in Ireland and overseas.

 

Entry Requirements:

 

Leaving Certificate/LCVP with a minimum of 2 HCs /OAs and three passes or equivalent or FETAC level 5 award with a merit profile or BTEC National Diploma with a merit profile. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+) All applicants will be auditioned.
